Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Meets with Bishop Yolios

In line with the ongoing efforts to combat irregular migration under the umbrella of the Egyptian Presidential Initiative "Safe Boats", Ambassador Nabil Habashi, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs for Immigration and Egyptians Abroad, met with Bishop Yolios, General Bishop and Head of the Bishopric of Public, Ecumenical, and Social Services.

The meeting focused on addressing the risks and consequences of irregular migration and exploring ways to enhance collaboration. Ambassador Habashi commended the Church’s proactive role in raising awareness, aligning with national efforts to curb the phenomenon. He particularly praised the video message delivered by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II in December, coinciding with International Migration Day, in which His Holiness urged youth to avoid unsafe migration routes and consider safe, positive alternatives.

The discussion also covered the ongoing partnership between the Church and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in organizing awareness campaigns across Egyptian governorates, especially in areas most affected by irregular migration. These efforts are complemented by the Church’s extensive vocational training programs offered to citizens across the country.

It is noteworthy that this meeting is part of the broader coordination and preparations to sign a formal protocol of cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Church, aimed at implementing the "Safe Boats" initiative. The protocol will focus on raising awareness about the dangers of irregular migration and promoting secure and constructive alternatives, in alignment with the state’s commitment to improving quality of life and eliminating the root causes of unsafe migration.
