Marina is a young girl with hearing impairment who struggled to communicate with others which made her unable to attend school. During this challenging time, the Rise Up and Walk center assisted Marina when she was 11, starting with assessments for her condition. Later on, Marina was provided with speech sessions and fit her with a hearing aid.
Over time, she became capable of expressing her needs, communicating effectively and returned to school regularly. Now, she has progressed to the secondary level at school, and her hearing aid has been upgraded in line with her developmental needs.

The twin sisters, Rosetta and Georgina, both aged 12, joined the talent school activity where they developed new understandings on how to resolve arguments, regulate and express their emotions.
As narrated by their mother, the two sisters fought a lot at home. After joining the program, Rosetta started talking to her twin sister about applying what they learned to form a good relationship together. They discussed everything sincerely including problem-solving and anger management skills that they learned about. They expressed their feelings appropriately and started communicating, and they even decided to divide household tasks between them. They learned how to express their emotions and manage their anger correctly, thus strengthening their relationship. The program contributed to changing the two sisters’ behavior and their dealings with each other more maturely and respectfully.

According to the World Bank, people living with disabilities represent over 15% of the world’s population.
BLESS support to People with Disabilities (PWDs)
The BLESS Rise Up and Walk Center seeks to support the integration and enhance the skills of people with disabilities.
The program offers:
- Rehabilitation sessions for PWDs provide medical assessments and sessions such as speech, sensory, behavioral development, and learning difficulties to improve their skills.
- Prosthetic devices for people with disabilities in cooperation with the Veterans & War Victims Association.
- Supporting visually impaired participants through the visual impairment unit to have a sense of independence.
- Physical therapy sessions to improve the motor skills of participants.
- Vocational training to skill PWDs for crafts and professions to launch and manage their small businesses.
- Social activities to support the integration of parents of children with disabilities and community members.
In 2024, The Rise Up and Walk Center reached a total number of 939 people with disabilities (PWDs) and 80% of the targeted PWDs have gained life skills enabling their integration. The program enhanced the skills of 214 children with learning difficulties, and speech and sensory issues through 6,780 rehabilitation sessions. Additionally, 129 children received nutrition items. The program provided prosthetics for 46 PWDs with motor disability and provided physical therapy sessions for 309 participants. The visually impaired unit provided 53 white canes and vocational training for 35 participants. Additionally, 85% of the targeted parents and community members can deal with PWDs, through engaging 450 of PWDs’ family members and raising the awareness of 298 community members.

Mrs. Sohair Gerges is a married housewife and mother of two children. She currently lives in Cairo after moving there from her birthplace in the Sohag governorate in Upper Egypt. In her youth, Sohair had taken some literacy classes however her elder brother opposed she continues her education, furthermore, she was taken out of school and was no longer able to read and write.
Mrs. Sohair attended a public meeting conducted by BLESS about the importance of education and decided that she will participate in literacy classes.
Mrs. Sohair now obtains her official certificate and is incredibly happy that she can now follow up with her children. She later on, worked very well as a secretary and increased her family’s income.
Improving the Standard of Education program seeks to support school students in their academic education and aims that 75% of the targeted students pass their course exams.
The program offers:
- Student study aid support aims to improve the educational capabilities of students and enhance their knowledge of school subjects and tutor them to pass their school exams.
- Reading and writing skill improvement courses aim to improve the reading, writing, and basic mathematics skills of children who lack academic basics.
- ICT knowledge courses for children and adults aim to target school students and adults to educate them with the capabilities of basic computer skills.

Growing up in a family that didn’t prioritize education and supported early marriage, Maryam faced difficulties arising from this background regarding her education. She is a preserved woman from Al Adaima Village in Luxor Governorate. Mariam managed to start her own small business; a kiosk selling chips and drinks. Maryam mentioned that she faced a lot of issues when it came to managing her business as the following “While I tried to manage my small business, I faced challenges in terms of reading, writing, and basic mathematical skills. It had negatively impacted my small business, and I couldn’t manage it well. I struggled with basic calculations when dealing with customers. I got really sad back then, as it was my only source of income, but it was already falling apart.”
She continues “As the time passed, I heard about BLESS literacy courses, and I was encouraged by field workers to join, so I decided to pursue my education. They assisted me throughout the process, and after 9 months of joining the courses, I passed the course exam and obtained the certificate. I learned how to read and write and mathematical skills. This helped me manage the finances of my project, and will assist me to expand and grow my small income project.”

Menna Mohamed lives in Al Zawatna village and is in second preparatory. Like other students, Menna needed help with her studies as her school classes are often crowded and she receives little support from her teachers.
When Menna heard about the BLESS “Life Tree” courses (study support classes), she joined with the goal to improve her educational level. After consistent attendance, her academic level improved and scored higher grades at school. Furthermore, Menna ranked second in her class and has stated that she dreams about being a flight attendant.
